Happy Birthday, Don Bosco!

Today was a dreary day for most, but not for me.

Today is the birthday of Don Bosco, who was born on August 16, 1815. Don Bosco, or St. John Bosco, was a priest from Italy who founded the Society of St. Francis de Sales (a/k/a the Salesians of Don Bosco). Don Bosco’s religious order was founded to serve the young and the poor, and they continue to do that to this day.

Interestingly, Don Bosco’s birthday prompted me to update my own estate planning documents. Don’t get me wrong, my documents were not old. We just updated them three or four years ago. However, with some time having passed, I realized today of all days that I might want to make some changes. Why? Because I am a Salesian, too! While I might be the husband and the father of the family, I know that I am called to serve my wife and children (a/k/a the “young”).

Don Bosco has a famous saying “It is not enough to love the young; they must know that they are loved.”

One way that my children will know that they are loved is that we will make sure that they are provided for after we are gone.

If it’s been a while since you looked at your plan, please dust it off. It’s more than some document…it’s an expression of love for those you care about.

Happy birthday, Don Bosco!
